This week has felt like an endless stream of coughs and it has been a challenge to find a moment of peace, let alone creative inspiration. But as I sip my tea and feel a glimmer of energy returning, I prescribe myself a reminder of how powerful a tool writing is.
So, grab your warmest blanket and a mug of something soothing, and let me remind you how writing can be a dose of creative self-care, even when the mental load (and a stuffy nose) feels overwhelming.
Going back to the original concept behind the blog and website writingdates - Writing Dates…
Think of them as intentional moments carved out in your day, dedicated solely to writing. No laundry lists, no meal planning, just you and your words. The goal isn't to produce a masterpiece but to be with your thoughts, feelings, and ideas. (Even when having a cold)
Stress Reduction: Writing has a therapeutic effect, allowing you to process emotions and declutter your mind.
Self-Discovery: By putting pen to paper, you uncover hidden desires, dreams, and insights.
Creative Spark: Regular writing dates ignite your imagination and help break through mental blocks.
Empowerment: Reclaiming time for yourself builds confidence and reinforces that your needs matter.
Choose Your Time: Morning, noon, or night - pick a time that fits your schedule and energy levels.
Create a Sacred Space: Find a quiet corner, light a candle, play soft music – whatever sets your mood.
Set a Timer: Start small, even 10-15 minutes can make a difference. Gradually increase as you get comfortable.
Free Write: Don't overthink, write whatever comes to mind. Let your thoughts flow freely.
Reflect: After your writing date, take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate your efforts.
A Cautionary Tale: Navigating the Mental Load & Finding Creative Balance
Sound simple right? And it should be. I managed to overcomplicate it yesterday when I tried to take my own medicine of using writing as creative self-care.
First I wanted to finish this blog post simultaneously setting up the writing date. When I allowed myself to leave the desk and take the writing date to the couch I immediately felt relief. However, I still managed to complicate the process. I wanted to print out the PDF word grid and it should have been no surprise that the colors came off all thwarted because the printer has been warning me of low ink levels for ages. So instead of a writing date, I found myself changing the ink cartridges (talk about a mental load task) and returning to the desk of scattered papers. Still coughing, tired, and a little stressed when I had to pick up my daughter.
Today is luckily a whole different story. Today I followed the simple steps. I took my notebook and sat down at my favorite writing spot in the house. I flipped the hourglass and started writing down an image I got in a visualization. The 15-minute writing date left me clues for what to write for the next writing session for my speculative fiction novel. But most important it made me breathe and smile. And when I closed the notebook I was ready to finish this blog post before going to pick up my daughter. Still coughing a bit but refreshed enough to take the stroller and not the car.
So, whether you're battling a cold or simply overwhelmed by the mental load, remember that writing can be a powerful antidote. It's a way to reconnect with yourself, ignite your creativity, and find moments of peace in the chaos.
If you're ready for more Writing Dates, I've created a beautiful printable featuring the image that inspired this post. Let it serve as a gentle reminder to carve out time for yourself and your words. Download it now, hang it in your writing nook, and let it inspire your creative self-care practice. Or cut them out, draw one, and use the word as a writing prompt.
